BREAKING: Luka Doncic signs historic 5-year $207 million extension with the Dallas Mavericks

After an inspired Olympic-run, Doncic signs a massive deal to stay with the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic has agreed to a five-year $207 million extension with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Bill Duffy, Doncic’s agent. Days after returning to Slovenia following an inspired run in the Tokyo Olympics, Doncic is receiving the largest supermax rookie extension in NBA history.

In a much publicized move, a front office contingent that included Dirk Nowitzki arrived in Slovenia to meet with Doncic and Duffy in Ljubljana to physically hand the young star his new max contract. Though free agency began last week Doncic made it clear he wished to focus exclusively on the Olympic tournament and address his contract after.

On his signing Doncic stated, “Today is a dream come true. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks, and appreciate the support of my fans.”

It’s been a whirlwind offseason for Doncic, who has had little time off since the Mavericks’ early exit from the NBA playoffs. Now he kicks off a well earned vacation with a massive and deserved deal.

MFFL’s everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief to see the franchise-saving superstar commit to the Mavericks. While there was little doubt that he would sign the deal, the physical act alone is cause for celebration.

New Mavericks GM Nico Harrison has had a relatively quiet first offseason in control. He signed sharpshooter Tim Hardaway Jr. to a new longterm deal, while adding wing Reggie Bullock to the rotation. There is also pending signings of Sterling Brown and Boban Marjanovic on the way. While there is obvious work to build up the roster so the Mavericks can finally make it past the first round of the playoffs, knowing Doncic is committed to the franchise for the future is a great place to start.
