Doncic has been recognized for his charity work off the court.
Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic has added another award to his growing pile. But this time it’s for his assists off the court. Doncic was awarded the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assists award for the month of April, the NBA announced.
Doncic will receive the David Robinson trophy and his foundation will receive a $10,000 donation from the NBA. Doncic’s foundation is dedicated to “empowering community heroes who bring the magic of sports to children, building a future in which active play shapes happy, empathetic kids, worldwide.”
Doncic is active in the Dallas-Fort Worth community and beyond. Much like Dirk Nowitzki, Doncic visits Cook Children’s Medical Center, handing out knit hats and blankets to patients and their families. He also hosted 50 kids at the American Airlines Center, helping most of them attend their first ever NBA game. Doncic also provided $43,000 in bids at the Mavs Ball, the Mavs Foundation’s annual charity event.
The list could go on, but you won’t find Doncic advertising much about it. Again, much like Nowitzki, he’s fairly lowkey about his charity work.
“Basketball has given me so much and I have a big responsibility to give back by helping wherever I can,” said Doncic. “It means everything to me to keep growing my foundation’s work by supporting those leading amazing community projects, connecting with more young people and spreading more generosity and kindness. I hope we can make an even bigger impact next year.”
Doncic was recognized in-arena as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner during halftime of Game 4 of the Clippers-Mavericks NBA Playoffs game on April 28th. Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont and Chief Executive Officer Cynt Marshall presented him with the award.
The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award honors Bob Lanier, an NBA League Office executive and NBA Cares Ambassador for more than 30 years. The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award recognition honors the next generation of players’ commitment to positively impacting their community throughout the NBA season. Over the course of each NBA season, there is an offseason winner followed by seven monthly award winners. Each winner receives the David Robinson trophy and the NBA makes a donation to the charity or foundation of the player’s choice.
