Non-fungible tokens people

Normally, I wouldn’t cover this just because I don’t entirely understand NFT’s (non-fungible tokens), but when something like this gets sent to me (h/t Tyler Atoms) I couldn’t resist just due to the headline possibility alone:

Luka Doncic has filed two new trademark applications indicating that he is getting into the NFT business:

1. LUKAVERSE for a platform to create, sell and trade NFT’s.

2. LUKAMORPH for a brand of NFT’s in the field of sports.#NFTs #DallasMavericks #NBA pic.twitter.com/RsyD4vEBmV

The world of NFT’s is big business at the moment as the world gets progressively more digital. Dallas owner Mark Cuban’s been at the forefront of the digital expasion, championing cryptocurrency as well as NFT’s specifically. In March he made news suggesting the Mavericks might want to turn their tickets into NFT’s.

That Luka Doncic is entering the world with trademarks specific to his brand is worth paying some attention to if you’re a Luka Doncic superfan. As one response to the tweet above notes, on he surface it feels a bit pointless for athletes to make individual subsets of NFT’s as they thus far have garnered value as being part of a branded community, like NBA Top Shot.

Then again, maybe I just wanted to type out LUKAVERSE and LUKAMORPH because the former sounds cool and the latter sounds like a Pokemon.

Of course, I’m more than willing to be educated on the subject, so let’s talk more about why this does or doesn’t matter in the comments.
