Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd managed to weather the storm of seeing the team trade away Luka Doncic. It certainly helps that the team landed Cooper Flagg, one of the highest-rated prospects since Victor Wembanyama.
So how does Kidd intend to deploy Flagg now that he has one of the brightest young prospects in pro basketball? In a recent interview, Kidd addressed Flagg’s immediate future with the team, stating his intentions to see Flagg play in the NBA Summer League.
As for the position, Kidd wants to start by seeing what Flagg can do at point guard before anything else.
“I want to put him at point guard… I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens,” Kidd said.

NBA fans were amused by the idea, but only from the standpoint of seeing Kidd attempt to coach Flagg the way that he coach Giannis Antetokounmpo back in the day:
“I can see the play now. Cooper brings up the ball. Gets it to Kyrie for the screen and roll, Flagg cuts to the basket, Kyrie drives or dishes it to Davis. The potential for the front court is really high,” one user wrote.
“I am fascinated to see how point-cooper coexists with a team that wants to win a title right now. Basketball! Things to talk about! Exciting!” wrote another.
“Whatever hope Flagg had at fixing his 3 pointer is officially dead, Kidd is going to take the same route with Flagg that he did Giannis…” a third wrote.
“Not surprising given the Mavericks not having Kyrie Irving for most of next season and the fact that Jason Kidd also tried making Giannis Antetokounmpo a point guard originally.”
Kidd was seemingly hung out to dry after the controversial Luka Doncic trade last season. But he overcame the situation, stayed with the team and is now set to lead them in the 2025-26 season.
He’ll have to do so without the services of all-world point guard Kyrie Irving though. Kyrie is slated to miss most of the season with a torn ACL.
Will Kidd succeed with Flagg as his star player?
