The Southern Methodist University’s men’s basketball program is making a change in leadership.

Per trusted college basketball insider Jeff Goodman, the Mustangs are moving on from head coach Tim Jankovich.

Jankovich’s contract with SMU reportedly expired at the end of this past season. The Mustangs have chosen not to extend his contract.

SMU, meanwhile, is reportedly targeting North Texas’ Grand McCasland to take over the program.

This isn’t much of a surprise within the SMU athletics community. Grand McCasland was a good coach for the Mustangs and had a solid overall record. However, the team consistently failed to live up to expectations.

SMU men’s basketball went 24-9 overall this season. The Mustangs missed out on the 2022 NCAA Tournament but received an invite to the NIT. After an opening-round win over Nicholls, SMU saw its season come to a close in a loss to Washington State.

The Mustangs are now targeting UNT’s Grand McCasland to take over. Jankovich, meanwhile, shouldn’t be out of a job for very long. He went 125-64 overall during his SMU tenure.

“Wow. Went 125-64 at SMU. Went 24-9 this past season. Whoever does end up replacing him will have expectations,” one fan tweeted.

“SMU was 3-2 vs. Houston and Memphis. Tough business,” another fan commented.

SMU joins the long list of college basketball programs in need of a new head coach this coming offseason.
