Russell was initially recruited to TCU by former assistant coach Ra’Shaad Samples, who departed for the Los Angeles Rams before joining the Arizona State coaching staff along with another former TCU assistant, Bryan Carrington. The 6-foot-4 freshman from Mesquite, Texas appeared in only three games and did not record a reception during the 2023 season. Russell is one of four TCU players currently in the transfer portal, joining safety Chace Biddle along with offensive tackle Jasper Lott and safety Daveion Crawford.
