Sebastián Driussi | Who is Austin FCs Newest Star?

August 1, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal Leave a Comment

Austin FC broke their transfer record when they secured the signature of Argentine Sebastián Driussi from Zenit St Petersburg.

The versatile attacking player, who will be a designated player, signed for a reported $7 million and was announced yesterday on the club’s official Twitter. Driussi has played in Europe’s elite competitions but what should fans know about Austin FCs newest star?

His Breakout Season in Argentinian Football

Driussi began his career in the River Plater under-20s. Alongside appearing for the River Plater youth side, Driussi was making a name for himself with the national side at the under-17 level. Whilst playing for Argentina’s under-17s, Driussi averaged almost a goal every two games with seven goals in 16 appearances.

Though he made eight appearances during the tail end of the 2015/16 campaign, Driussi would burst onto the scene during River Plate’s 2016/17 Russian League season. With 20 goal contributions (including 17 goals) during his last season with River Plate, Driussi earned a move to European football as he joined Zenit St Petersburg.

Competing Among Europe’s Elite with Zenit.

Much like his time in Argentina, Driussi enjoyed a relatively impressive start to life in Russia. He produced a solid five goals and five assists in his 20 starts in the Russian division. The Argentine also got his first taste of European football during this campaign as he scored a singular goal during Zenit’s Europa League campaign.

His most impressive stint in Russia came during 2018/19. During the Russian Premier League season, Driussi was given the man of the match award in almost a quarter of his starts which is outstanding at any level. He also secured his best goal-scoring return as a Zenit player that season with 11 league goals.

Unfortunately, the 25-year-old would not recapture that form in the following years. A difficult spell ensued where he only managed six goals in two seasons with the Russian Giants. However, he was able to score in Europe’s elite competition the UEFA Champions League.

What are Austin FC Getting?

Undoubtedly, Austin FC is getting a player with proven quality who has scored goals at the highest level of European football. A versatile player who can impress in every aspect of the attacking third, Driussi could be a difference-maker offensively in the Lone Star State. And if he recaptures the form he had during 2018/19, Austin FC record fee will prove to be a bargain.
