2 Major Programs Named “Losers” Of The NFL Draft

May 3, 2022 by The Spun

A closeup of Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney.

The 2022 NFL draft has come and gone. And now, with the dust settled, 247Sports‘ Blake Brockermeyer sat down to go over college football’s winners and losers from this past weekend’s event.

Upon review, two major programs really stuck out to the CFB analyst; and not in a good way.

His first big loser: the Texas Longhorns.

NFL Draft is over. Texas Longhorns do not have a player selected. The last time this occurred was in 2014.

It pains me to say it but there’s no skirting around the facts: For the second time in less than a decade, (2014), Texas failed to produce a player drafted.

That’s hard to believe in a talent-rich state like Texas. The Longhorns have had multiple highly-ranked recruiting classes that have not panned out for multiple reasons. Adding insult to injury is former running back Keaontay Ingram, who Texas developed for three seasons, doesn’t count in the Longhorns’ tally as Ingram transferred to USC for his final season.

Before taking aim at a more recent college football power: Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers.

Only cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. (second round) and linebacker Baylon Spector (seventh) heard their names called over the weekend, which was the fewest under Dabo Swinney.

The last time Clemson had just two players selected in the draft was in 2008, when Tommy Bowden was the head coach. …  this was a step back for Clemson a year after the Tigers were a big winner of the draft … Blame should go to the 2019 class, which ranked No. 12 nationally and has vastly underachieved.

Clemson should bounce back nicely after a strong 2020 recruiting class. However, a path for Texas isn’t quite as clear.
