The Mississippi prospect chose Texas over numerous SEC suitors.
After the first weekend of summer visits, the Texas Longhorns added a second massive piece to the recruiting class with the addition of Petal (Miss.) defensive tackle Corey Wells on Monday.

The consensus four-star defensive lineman was on campus as a part of the June 6 visit, a trip that marked his final scheduled campus trip of the summer. Prior to visiting the Forty Acres, Wells was hosted by the Auburn Tigers and the home-state Ole Miss Rebels before ultimately deciding on the Longhorns. He reportedly 18 offers, including 10 from SEC schools, as well as the Michigan Wolverines, Florida State Seminoles, and the Miami Hurricanes.
Wells measures 6’5 and 300 pounds, a ready-made defensive tackle on a lean frame that may add more weight once he reaches campus. He currently ranks as the No. 274 defensive overall recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite, but ranks more than 100 spots higher at No. 170 according to the 247Sports rankings. Petal primarily plays a 3-4 defensive front, which may lend itself to a shorter path to learning his role in Pete Kwiatkowski’s scheme once he arrives on campus.
This marks the second defensive tackle to commit after the official visit weekend, joining Louisiana product Dylan Berymon in the class, who committed on Saturday. Defensive line coach Kenny Baker has already secured his second commitment of the cycle after a slow start in his first season with the Longhorns, and No. 6 for him as a recruiter at Texas.
The addition of Wells moves Texas up two spots to No. 16 in the 247Sports rankings, continuing its rapid ascent in the quest for yet another top-five class. Perhaps more notably, this marks the fourth “trenches” player for Texas in the cycle, as Well and Berymon join offensive linemen Max Wright and Nicholas Robertson in the group, the start of another lineman-heavy cycle for head coach Steve Sarkisian and company.
