Plus: Texas football recruiting news
ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum is man who’s paid for his opinions. Normally, for better or worse, we bring him up because he has a strong opinion about the Texas Longhorns. That’s the territory that comes with having a hit radio talk show on ESPN.
And among Finebaum’s opinions is a belief that the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten Conference should be the ones steering their destinies during College Football Playoff expansion talks, as insiders suggest the CFP will potentially soon move from a 12-team to a 16-team field, with four automatic spots apiece for the SEC and Big Ten, according to On3.
“I think conventional wisdom is the Big Ten and the SEC are driving every ship and quite frankly they ought to. They are the two most dominant entities in college football,” Finebaum reportedly saiud. “So, I think that’s where it’s going. There’s always resistance. But I have hard time believing a lot of the ACC, the Big 12 or anyone for that matter would be opposed to it.
Finebaum added, “I understand the complaints, 12 seemed at times too large last year. But if we end up going to automatic qualifiers, this makes it a little bit easier. And quite frankly, I know this is a cliché that there’s never too much football, but as long as they have a good plan, I think the public will buy in.”
