Arch Manning stole the spotlight during Texas’ annual spring game.
The second-year quarterback opened his day with a 75-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore and completed his first 10 passes. He registered 355 yards and three touchdowns Saturday at Austin.
Manning wasn’t the only Longhorns quarterback who impressed in the Orange and White game. Trey Owens completed 14 of 21 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
Both passers are still behind Quinn Ewers, who returns to Texas after steering the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff. Ewers praised his two teammates after the spring game.
“They both did a great job of showcasing how much they’ve both grown throughout this whole entire spring,” Ewers told reporters. “It was fun to watch.”
Manning entered Texas as the nation’s top recruit last year. The nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning saw his only playing time when completing two of five passes in a 57-7 victory over Texas Tech last November.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was happy to get the 18-year-old some reps on Saturday.
“I wanted Arch to be able to just go play football,” Sarkisian said, per ESPN’s Dave Wilson. “He hadn’t really played in a year. … When he keeps his eyes up and steps up in the pocket, he can deliver those balls down the field the way we like to play. It was good to see, and it’s good to see some of the guys around him play with him the way that they did.”
Manning continues to generate excitement in Texas before playing a full game, but he’ll probably have to wait longer to take the reins from Ewers.
