SEC Commissioner Reveals Target Date For Oklahoma, Texas

September 12, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey talks before SEC conference tournament.

At some point in the coming years, Oklahoma and Texas will be members of the SEC. The only question is when?

The SEC added the Longhorns and Sooners to the conference during the offseason, plucking them out of the Big 12 in the process. It’s still unclear when the two storied programs will begin playing within the conference. TV deals appear to be the biggest obstacle.

Some have speculated Oklahoma and Texas could end up joining the SEC sooner rather than later. Both programs and the SEC have the money to get out of TV contracts. But it doesn’t sound like Greg Sankey and the SEC are planning on the Longhorns and Sooners joining the SEC before 2025.

Sankey told reporters on Saturday that the SEC is still “targeting” 2025 as the year to add Oklahoma and Texas to the mix.

“We’ve talked about the ‘25 season,” Sankey said, via 247Sports. “Yesterday (with Big 12 expansion) was an interesting day. Everybody has relationships, a lot of work to do, we’re focused on ‘25. We wanted to be respectful, even though when you go through conference transition, people will throw that back at me. But credit to the SEC and the University of Texas, and the University of Oklahoma, who wanted to be a part of this great conference. We’re going to have an orderly transition and that’s why we’re focused on ‘25. But I’m a pretty adaptable person.”

So there you have it. It sounds like Oklahoma and Texas will continue playing in the Big 12 until 2025.

This could be a good thing for the Longhorns and Sooners. It allows both to improve their recruiting in time for SEC play.

Once Oklahoma and Texas join the SEC, it’s going to be a long time until another conference is capable of catching up.
