When rumblings of a potential Texas and Oklahoma move to the SEC started to develop two weeks ago, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian remained quiet on the matter. Now one week after the SEC presidents unanimously voted to grant entry for both Big 12 programs, the first-year UT head coach has finally broken his silence.
He didn’t reveal too much about his personal thoughts, though.
“I’ve got a great deal of trust and faith in our leadership here at the University of Texas,” Sarkisian said, per Longhorns insider Jeff Howe.
Sark on the move to the SEC: “I’ve got a great deal of trust and faith in our leadership here at the University of Texas.”
He said CDC has done a good job of communicating the status of things with the coaches across all sports on campus. #HookEm

Sarkisian spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator for the SEC’s Alabama Crimson Tide. If the first-year head coach sticks out his six-year, $34.2 million contract with the Longhorns, he’ll make a return to the SEC with his new Texas squad in the near future.
Texas and Oklahoma have grant of rights contracts with the Big 12 that expire in the summer of 2025. Both programs are expected to wait out the remainder of their deals and join the SEC prior to the 2025 season. If they wanted to buy out of their contracts and join the SEC early, the schools would have to pay upwards of $150 million, per FanNation.
The Longhorns haven’t won a Big 12 title since 2009. Because of this, many wonder if the Texas program will be able to make a successful jump to the more competitive SEC.
With new leadership under Sarkisian and a couple of solid upcoming recruiting classes, Texas will look to turn things around before their conference shift in 2025.
