Steve Spurrier Has Another Blunt Message For Texas

Steve Spurrier has had no issue bashing Texas in the past and that trend continued on Thursday. The former Florida and South Carolina coach was back with another insult for the Longhorns

In an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show Thursday, Spurrier gave his thoughts on what would incentivize Texas and Oklahoma to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. While “the Head Ball Coach” understood the Sooners’ desire for a challenge, he was far more critical of the Longhorns when explaining what he thought their reasoning was for jumping ship.

“If you’re going to struggle in the Big 12, you might as well struggle in the SEC,” Spurrier told Finebaum.

Although Spurrier’s comment might be somewhat exaggerated, Texas hasn’t exactly been successful in the Big 12 as of late. The Longhorns last won a conference championship in 2009 and have only won the conference twice in the last 25 years. Simply put, Texas isn’t the powerhouse it once was.

Thursday’s dig at is just the latest of Spurrier’s remarks about Texas to turn some heads. Soon after the jump to the SEC became official, he shared that he didn’t think the Longhorns could win the Big 12 anymore.

“I can understand Texas jumping over,” Spurrier said. “They get to play Texas A&M again… They can’t win the Big 12 anyway. I think they’ve only won two in the last 30 years or so. So I can see Texas jumping over — more money, playing A&M, this, that and the other…”

Spurrier, who spent most of his head coaching days in the SEC when he was at the college level, is seemingly still partial to his old conference. However, he couldn’t help but feel bad for the other teams in the Big 12, not named Texas or Oklahoma.

“I feel sad for the other (Big 12) schools – Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State and all those guys,” the 76-year-old said last week. “They obviously need those two schools there. But, looks like it’s gonna happen. Maybe it will work out for the best.”

Spurrier’s honest opinions on Texas are surely shared by others around the country and maybe even amongst active coaches. Now that “the Head Ball Coach” is out of the game, he’s clearly decided to use his voice however he pleases.
