Texas freshman sets scoring record

February 27, 2025 by Zags Blog

Freshman guard Tre Johnson set The University of Texas freshman single-game scoring record with 39 points, but the Longhorns (16-12, 5-10 SEC) dropped a hard-fought 86-81 overtime decision at Arkansas (17-11, 6-9 SEC) on Wednesday night. This marked the first matchup in Fayetteville between the two former Southwest Conference rivals since Jan. 5, 2010.

Johnson, a projected lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft, broke the previous freshman single-game scoring mark of 37 points, set four times by Kevin Durant during the 2006-07 season and once by Terrence Rencher in 1991-92.

Johnson converted a career-best 14-of-28 field goals, including a career-high 7-of-11 from three-point range, and 4-of-4 free throws to go along with four assists and two steals in 38 minutes.

Johnson reached the 30-point mark for the third time this season. He eclipsed his previous season high of 32 points set in the home victory over No. 15/18 Kentucky on Feb. 15. Senior Arthur Kaluma recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in 37 minutes, and graduate Kadin Shedrick added 12 points (4-6 FG, 1-1 threes, 3-4 FT), eight boards, three assists and one block in 29 minutes.

Texas returns to the court when it hosts Georgia on Saturday, March 1. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT at Moody Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
