Longhorns win out in a recruitment for a former Mountain West defender.
The Longhorns received some good news from the transfer portal today in the form of a commitment. After recently losing out on the Damonic Willaims sweepstakes as the former TCU defender opted for Oklahoma, the Longhorns scored a win on the defensive side of the ball.
San Jose State transfer cornerback Jayvion Cole announced his commitment to Texas this afternoon as he concluded his official visit. The Longhorns beat programs like Auburn, Cincinnati, Michigan State, and Tennessee for Cole’s services.

After losing Terrance Brooks to the transfer portal following the conclusion of spring practice, Texas needed to add some depth to their secondary given that Brooks had logged 19 starts during his time in Austin.
Cole became a starter for the Spartans early in the season and put together a sophomore campaign where he led the Mountain West in PBUs with ten (14th in the country) and led the team in interceptions with three. Cole received an All-Conference honorable mention in 2023 from the MWC but also received All-Conference accolades from Pro Football Focus for his outstanding season.
From SJUSUSpartans.com:
From PFF “Cole surrendered just a 40.8 passer rating when targeted this season, ranking sixth among Group of Five cornerbacks. His 86.2 grade led all Mountain West defenders, as well.”
Cole also led the Spartans with three interceptions and 10 pass breakups which were good for 10th in the country and second in the Mountain West.
This is his first honor from Pro Football Focus and his second honor this season after being named All-Mountain West Honorable Mention.

Cole will have two years of eligibility remaining once he arrives in Austin and he certainly seems to be a guy whose stock is on the rise following his sophomore season. It will be interesting to see what his role will be within Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense once he gets acclimated given he is going to be arriving post-spring practice, but you can never have too many corners who possess good cover traits.
