The 6’3, 165-pounder was ranked as the No. 168 overall prospect by MLB.com after signing with the Texas Longhorns. The drop in the draft could be a positive sign for head coach Jim Schlossnagle unless the Angels decide to make an offer to Mitchell more in line with his pre-draft ranking than his 13th-round selection.
Here’s the scouting report on Mitchell from MLB.com:
Mitchell’s fastball sits at 90-92 mph and tops out at 94, playing better than its velocity because he hides it well and it carries past barrels at the top of the strike zone. He displays fine aptitude for throwing an upper-70s curveball with depth that works well in tandem with the shape of his heater. He has begun dabbling with a low-80s changeup that fades and sinks, though he doesn’t use it much.
His ability to repeat his athletic three-quarters delivery allows Mitchell to provide consistent strikes. His slender 6-foot-3 frame has plenty of room to add muscle, which could add power to his fastball and curveball and make both of them plus offerings. It’s unclear how his shoulder woes will affect his Draft status, and he’ll pitch at Texas if he attends college.
Mitchell is ranked as the No. 57 overall prospect and the No. 6 left-handed pitcher in the 2025 recruiting class by Perfect Game.
