Texas Reportedly Considered Joining 2 Other Conferences

August 3, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

Texas Longhorns cheerleaders.

The University of Texas is officially heading to the SEC, though the soon-to-be former Big 12 power reportedly considered a pair of other conferences.

Jay Hartzell, the 30th President of the University of Texas, said on Monday evening that his school considered two other conferences: ACC and Big Ten.

The university president clarified that Texas did not reach out to either the ACC or the Big Ten. However, the Longhorns did consider those conferences internally.

The ACC and the Big Ten surely would have had interest in adding Texas if the Longhorns expressed interest.

To be clear: Hartzell said Texas never reached out to those leagues but did consider internally.

The SEC is the landing spot, though. Texas and Oklahoma will be departing the Big 12 for their new conference at some point in the coming years.

ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum addressed the eventual move on Monday.

“Yeah, I think really, it all comes down to the Big 12,” Finebaum said on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning. “And yeah…I don’t really fault [Big 12 Commissioner] Bob Bowlsby for his whining, he’s positioning, he’s overdone it, and I don’t think he’ll continue to do it, because nobody really wants to hear a whiner. But what he’s really doing is positioning himself for a negotiation with ESPN. And I think that’s where this is going to be driven.”

Finebaum said it’ll come down to negotiations with the Big 12.

“Once the Big 12 figures out his path to the future,” Finebaum said, “we will either see Texas and Oklahoma remain or bailout … I still think it happens sooner but it’s impossible to tell until everything else clears up.”
