Three of the four spring transfers have made commitments in addition to an itinerant winter departure.
During a spring transfer window that the Texas Longhorns executed flawlessly in terms of addressing remaining needs and retaining players, head coach Steve Sarkisian’s team did suffer four defections into the NCAA transfer portal.
Three of those four players have committed, while another winter transfer is now at his second stop after Texas.
Here’s the status of all five players.
Wide receiver Johntay Cook — Syracuse
Since the mutual decision for Cook to leave the program back in November, he spent several months making questionable posts on social media, got dismissed from Washington shortly after arriving, and was arrested twice.
Cook entered the transfer portal again during the spring window and received interest from Arkansas, BYU, Houston, Indiana, and Oklahoma, visiting Arizona State before committing to Syracause.

Wide receiver Freddie DuBose — Uncommitted
After redshirting during his lone season on the Forty Acres due to a knee injury sustained in high school, the Smithson Valley product departed the program prior to spring practice. DuBose officially entered the portal when it opened and reportedly took a visit to Fresno State, but hasn’t yet made a decision about his future.
Offensive lineman Malik Agbo — West Virginia
Agbo saw his playing time decrease in 2024 after serving as the team’s jumbo tight end in 2023, becoming the first and only offensive lineman from the seven-man 2022 recruiting class to enter the portal.
Agbo committed to West Virginia at the end of April.

Kicker Bert Auburn — Miami
Consistency issues for the three-year starter forced Texas to consider other options at the end of spring practice and Auburn decided to depart.
Auburn spent nine days in the portal before committing to Miami after a visit to Coral Gables.

Punter Michael Kern — Cal
Despite Texas adding Jack Bouwmeester from Utah during the winter transfer window, the initial plan was for Kern to redshirt during the 2025 season before returning to the starting role that he held during the 2024 season as a true freshman.
Instead, Kern opted to enter the portal and took a visit to Oklahoma State before landing in Berkeley.
