For now, it appears we won’t get this tournament in 2021.
It turns out, we may have to wait another year to see the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Tournament back on the field. Citing continued logistical and financial challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, US Soccer’s Open Cup Committee announced Friday that the 2021 edition of the tournament will not be held this spring.
According to Friday’s release, the Committee will evaluate the possibility of conducting the competition later in the year.
After last year’s cancelation, this season’s tournament was scheduled to be played between May 18-June 30 under a revised format approved by the Committee to include 16 teams, eight from MLS, with the first three weeks of the league season to be used as qualifying.
Given the congestion of the schedule later in the year for the MLS sides, it doesn’t seem as logical that we’ll get a fall version of this tournament but you never know.
So, for now, we wait on a new champion, likely next year when things with the pandemic not being as much of a thing as they’ve been these last 14 months.
What do you all make of this news? Relieved that there won’t be extra games to tire out the team? Or disappointed in one less trophy that FC Dallas can pick up in 2021?
