Two assists from Szabolcs Schon on a night that saw FC Dallas take down their new rival.
There was no being green with envy for FC Dallas on Saturday night as they took down their new in-state rivals Austin FC 2-0. The win extends FC Dallas’s unbeaten run to four games while placing them atop the Copa Tejas standings.
Dallas got second half goals from Ryan Hollingshead and Jesus Ferreira, while Szabolcs Schon picked up two assists on the night.
Austin began the match with a lot of energy that led to some good chances on goal. In the seventh minute, Daniel Pereira sent a cross through the Dallas backline to the run of Manny Perez who forced Jimmy Maurer to come off his line and make a big stop on his attempt. The visitors would pressure Maurer into a pair of first half saves, while the Dallas offense failed to truly create any chances on goal.
Shortly after the half, Dallas made a breakthrough as Schon tracked down a ball near the end line before feeding the ball back to Hollingshead who hammered home his second goal of the season.
Dallas doubled their lead in the 63rd minute as Nkosi Tafari picked off a ball in the midfield. He found Schon making a run at the left side of the penalty box and the Hungarian wisely slid the ball across the Austin defense where Ferreira was there to one-time it into the back of the net for his second of the season.
Instant reaction: Let’s be honest, Austin had their moments and chances in this one and if they had a guy who could finish, this score may have been different. The guys in white (and green) had a number of good chances that tested Maurer and the Dallas back line.
But at the end of the night, the better team won in this one. Dallas took the most of their chances with the front four looking better and better. You definitely want to see more of what Schon, Ferreira, Pomykal, and Pepi can do here.
Man of the match: With two assists on the night, it has to be Schon. He played perfect passes on both goals and showed exactly why there is hype around him.
What’s next for FC Dallas: The homestand continues as FC Dallas hosts Sporting Kansas City next Saturday.
