Video review was not FC Dallas’ friend on the night.
FC Dallas’ playoff chances didn’t improve on Saturday night as they picked up a scoreless draw against Minnesota United.
The draw was the club’s first scoreless match since opening game of the 2021 season.
FC Dallas had a couple of decent chances in the early stages of this one. In the 15th minute, Jesus Ferreria collected the ball at the top of the penalty box and then carved up a perfect ball behind the Minnesota defense where Hollingshead met the ball and put in a shot to the far post that went wide.
Just before halftime, FC Dallas pressed again for the game’s first goal as Jader Obrian looked for pick up a foul outside the penalty box as he left the ball off for Ricardo Pepi who fired a shot that went high.
In the 60th minute, Dallas finally took the lead as Hollingshead settled the ball in the box on a cross that Ema Twumasi sent. Hollingshead took one touch and then found the back of the net. Unfortunately, the goal was called back after a video review that showed Hollingshead had touched the ball with his arm to settle it before scoring.
Minnesota had a couple of good chances of their own in the second half that forced Phelipe into a couple of big time stops. The biggest being a double save on Robin Lod and Franco Fragapane in the 72nd minute.
Minnesota played the final minutes of the match down a man as Emanuel Reynoso was issued a red card after a video review.
Instant reaction: It is kind of wild that this was the first scoreless draw for FC Dallas since April. Still, FC Dallas was decent in moments in this one that we’ve seen time and time again this season. Jesus Ferreira and Pepi had nice moments in the first half. There was a lot of good ball movement on the night that pinned Minnesota back at times too. But losing out on the Hollingshead goal felt like more of what we’ve seen out of this season, things out of their control not going their way. As much as you want to believe in this group, depending on how some results go this weekend we could see a possible elimination scenario coming real soon for FC Dallas by the time of their next match.
Man of the match: For the big stops, you have to give it to Phelipe.
What’s next for FC Dallas: After a nice break from play due to the October FIFA window, FC Dallas will return to action on October 20 as they host LAFC.
