Sebastian Lletget Trade Sees Him Join FC Dallas

August 4, 2022 by Last Word On Soccer

New England Revolution midfielder Sebastian Lletget on July 16, 2022

It feels like just yesterday that Sebastian Lletget arrived in New England. His move over from the West Coast was one that brought mixed feelings. Some Revs’ fans were excited to see the USMNT midfielder in action, whilst others were skeptical. His time with the club has proved to be very short-lived with it today being announced that he has been traded to FC Dallas.

Why Are Sebastian Lletget and Bruce Arena Parting Ways?

This really does seem to be a move out of the blue. Bruce Arena has regularly alluded to there being a chance of ins and outs for the remainder of this summer window. The former seemed more likely and yet here we are, discussing the loss of a pretty influential figure. Sebastian Lletget was brought in from the LA Galaxy in the most recent off-season, one of three major signings.

Lletget arrived along with two other players who have previously worked with Arena, Jozy Altidore and Omar Gonzalez. Altidore’s time with the Revs has been underwhelming to the point that he has been loaned out to Mexico. Gonzalez himself has put together several below-par performances. In truth, Sebastian Lletget was the only one doing anywhere near a good job of this trio.

We’ve made a trade with @FCDallas 🤝

Thank you, @SLletget.

Sebastian Lletget and what he meant to the New England Revolution

“We would like to thank Sebastian for his professionalism and dedication to the Revolution this season. This trade presented a great opportunity for the player and our club, and we wish Sebastian nothing but success in Dallas.” These are the words of Coach Arena on the situation and it was him who played a major role in Lletget’s signing. The pair linked up with the Galaxy and the USMNT so it is a strong relationship.

Positionally, there were some teething issues for the 29-year-old in his first season with the Revolution. He is best off as an attacking midfielder but was more regularly used out wide. “Now I want to be part of the team that brings its first championship to New England” was what Lletget said to me in an interview just last week. There was a clear desire for him to succeed with this organization and so for him to get traded like this seems to be something out of nothing.

What Next For the Club and the Player?

When it comes to the finances involved with this Sebastian Lletget trade, it certainly makes for interesting reading. For both 2022 and 2023, the Revolution is receiving $300,000 in General Allocation Money, totalling $600,000. This now allows Arena more roster and budgeting space as it seems he will surely make a signing or two before the window closes.

Starting with the San Francisco-born star and his future takes him down south. The Revs are wallowing below the playoff line, meanwhile, FC Dallas is occupying fourth in the Western Conference. He will partner with the likes of Paxton Pomykal and Jesus Ferreira, in general, there is a good youthful energy about the place. Nico Estevez has an exciting project which will only be better with the arrival of Sebastian Lletget.

Turning attention to the Revs now and this last week or so of the window could decide their season. It was geared towards succeeding in the Champions League and their failure there has had repercussions on MLS form. Between the ten-game unbeaten streak and consistent defensive shortcomings, it really is anyone’s guess as to how the rest of this season pans out.

The goal has to be getting above that dreaded line and the rumours that could make all the difference haven’t stopped swirling. Will Arnor Traustason move on? Is Venezuelan Christian Makoun going to join Charlotte FC? Who else could come through the door? Nobody knows, but what is known is that Sebastian Lletget is now an FC Dallas man. The Frisco boys have really got themselves a player there.
