4 free agents Cowboys could consider bringing to training camp

There are still some free agent options who the Cowboys should be considering.

The recent addition of James Houston suggests the Dallas Cowboys aren’t done attempting to upgrade their roster, even at positions like defensive end where there was already a logjam of talent. With the way the roster looks right now, there are still several positions that could stand to be upgraded and players still available who can help.

Today, we take a look at four free agents who are still currently available on the open market who we believe the Cowboys should consider bringing into training camp, whether it’s for just a looksee or to upgrade a specific position.

CB Mike Hilton

Even though the Cowboys traded for former first-rounder Kaiir Elam and drafted Shavon Revel in the third-round, they have as of yet addressed the depth at slot CB after Jourdan Lewis’ departure via free agency. DaRon Bland likely replaces Lewis, but behind him Dallas’ options are pretty much nonexistent. Bringing in Mike Hilton, who has been one of the better nickel CBs in the league, would erase any and all concerns at the position.

DT Raekwon Davis

The Cowboys had one of the worst run defenses in the league in 2024 and did little over the offseason that suggests they will be much, if any, better this year. And, to add insult to injury, Dallas’ former first-round pick Mazi Smith has dropped weight and is expected to play more of a hybrid DT role this year. Despite adding some new faces to the DT room, the Cowboys could stand to upgrade the interior of their DL with a big-bodied, run-stuffer like Raekwon Davis, a former second-round pick. He’d provide veteran experience and depth.

CB Stephon Gilmore

The Cowboys have plenty of bodies to provide depth at the outside CB position, but still have to work through plenty of injuries in the early portion of the season before the starters are settled in. What better way to circumvent this issue than to add a veteran stopgap who has not only seen it all in his career, but is also no stranger playing in Dallas. Even at nearly 35 years old, Stephon Gilmore has enough left in the tank to help the Cowboys.

LB Ja’Whaun Bentley

Despite trading for Kenneth Murray Jr. and signing free agent Jack Sanborn, the Cowboys LB position right now is a bit of the mystery, especially with DeMarvion Overshown’s unknown timetable to return this year. Ja’Whaun Bentley could be the perfect buy-low candidate who could bounce back in a big way. He missed nearly all of the 2024 season due to an injury, but had three seasons of 100+ tackles prior to that. The 6’2″, 250-pound MLB would give Dallas another quality starting player with veteran experience.
