Breaking: Could Latest 49ers Injury Signal a Trade?

September 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After his latest injury with the San Francisco 49ers, the team may trade running back Christian McCaffrey. According to the breaking news, McCaffrey was getting back into shape of things as far as his health, but the running back was added to the injury report. Originally selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Stanford product is one of the best running backs in the league, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy in recent memory. Last year, it was looking like Jordan Mason would eventually take over starting duties for the running back unit.

However, this was until the 49ers sent Mason to the Minnesota Vikings. This gave McCaffrey another shot to secure his job, but if injuries continue to pile up as the season progresses, they might not have a choice but to either trade him or part ways after the 2025 regular season. After trading for Brian Robinson Jr., it’s not a guarantee that he will emerge as the 49ers’ starter anytime soon, but if he trends toward outperforming McCaffrey, then it might be time to make a decision here. This is all just speculation with Week 1 still underway, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens for the next few months, and these teams may target McCaffrey if he becomes available.

Breaking: Could Latest Christian McCaffrey Injury Signal a Trade? – 4 Potential Destinations

Best Fits

Dallas Cowboys

Depending on the situation with the Dallas Cowboys’ run game, they could target McCaffrey if he becomes available. The 49ers would probably want to avoid trading to Dallas, but if they come up with the right offer and it’s close to a postseason contention for the Cowboys, they might have to use some of their early future draft picks to trade away. The good news is that Javonte Williams is showing that he can develop into a true No. 1 option for the running back unit.

However, McCaffrey could turn this Dallas run game from average to explosive if the team can figure out how to get him a part of Dak Prescott’s offense.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, head coach Jim Harbaugh loves running the football, and if it means McCaffrey to build upon Omarion Hampton and Najee Harris, he may make that decision. While the coach wants physicality in their run game, he can’t ignore the potential speed that McCaffrey has left. Harris is slated to become a free agent next year unless the Chargers see a future in him. If Harbaugh wants to truly help Justin Herbert with a run game, he should get McCaffrey once he becomes available.

Jacksonville Jaguars

However, the running back situation is interesting in Jacksonville. They were able to re-establish the wide receiver core group, trading Christian Kirk and bringing in new talent like Travis Hunter. Even though they haven’t made any changes in their running back room, it doesn’t mean they won’t. Travis Etienne is entering his contract year, and if he doesn’t get much attention, they should trade him and get McCaffrey a part of their unit if they want to boost their postseason chances.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are starting their running back room from scratch. After trading Brian Robinson Jr., they could look into acquiring McCaffrey at some point down the line. The 49ers and Commanders have already made plenty of trades before, so why not?
