Breaking: Cowboys Could Trade Draft Bust After Thursday Night Football

September 4, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The NFL 2025 regular season is around the corner, but the Dallas Cowboys might trade defensive tackle Mazi Smith after this week’s opener. According to Bleacher Report, the source believes Smith is on the trade block this campaign as he’s been struggling to make any impact for the past two seasons in Dallas. Despite recording just 54 tackles and two sacks, most of those numbers came from last season, so it looks like he’s more of a bust than an impact player. This is why the source thinks Smith should be on the move, as he might be able to benefit from a scenery change.

Originally selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, the former Michigan product hasn’t been living up to his potential while trying to establish himself as a starting-capable defensive tackle. After trading away their generational pass-rusher, Micah Parsons, to the Green Bay Packers, they got defensive tackle Kenny Clark, and he’s slated to start ahead of Smith. If he ends up having a blockbuster performance come Week 1 of the regular season, the Cowboys might consider trading Smith since they have Clark and Osa Odighizuwa as a reliable duo on the defensive line. While it could be difficult to trade him since he doesn’t have a proven track record, these four suitors might roll the dice to see what type of potential he has.

Next Possible Teams

Baltimore Ravens

After losing Michael Pierce to retirement, the Baltimore Ravens were only able to sign a journeyman veteran, John Jenkins. He isn’t the most reliable starter the Ravens should be looking for, so they should probably roll the dice on Smith. The defensive tackle won’t easily repair the defensive line that already lost Jadeveon Clowney and Pierce, but he’s better than Jenkins. Nnamdi Madubuike is arguably the only reliable one who can make impactful plays, while Broderick Washington and Travis Jones are average at best.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have upgraded their defense this offseason despite trading away Khalen Saunders in a sudden move. After acquiring Davon Godchaux and signing Jonathan Bullard, the Saints should continue to build on their defensive foundation. It looks promising for the Saints offensively with Spencer Rattler emerging as a promising signal-caller, but they must win on both sides of the ball if the team plans to push for a postseason run.

Washington Commanders

However, the Washington Commanders signed Javon Kinlaw, who was one of the most disappointing free agent acquisitions in the league. After losing Dante Fowler Jr., they can’t easily rely on an old Von Miller, who is past his prime. While Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu will strengthen this defensive roster again, why not figure out a way to trade for Mazi Smith? It won’t be the first time that head coach Dan Quinn looks to acquire a former Cowboy, as Dorance Armstrong is still on the active roster.

Carolina Panthers

Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers have completely improved their defensive roster in the best way possible. After signing both Bobby Brown and Tershawn Wharton, the Panthers could use more depth in the defensive tackle department. When you have Derrick Brown, who is returning from a season-ending injury, it’s best to add some backup.
