Breaking: Cowboys Could Trade Former Second Round Bust – 5 Possible Fits

May 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

cowboys trade jonathan mingo

Despite arriving on the team last season, it might be time for the Dallas Cowboys to trade wide receiver Jonathan Mingo this 2025 campaign. Many reports believe Mingo could outplay Jalen Tolbert, but the chances of that happening are slim since he hasn’t been able to get open in the aerial attack for Cooper Rush to find him to hit targets heading his way. While Dak Prescott was out with an injury and which could be why Mingo didn’t live up to expectations, it’s still worth noting the Cowboys could trade Mingo if he continues to be inconsistent. Tolbert has a lot of upside, and Mingo still has a long way to go to prove that he could be a worthy slot option for this offense.

Originally selected in the 2023 draft, the former Ole Miss product has had one of the worst starts to his rookie season in 2023, hoping to carve out a role alongside veteran Adam Thielen. The Panthers got more weapons to try to accommodate him, but it made things worse for Mingo since Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette were thriving last year. The new emerging wideouts make Mingo expendable, and it looks like this could be the case since the Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Tolbert. Mingo won’t garner the best return, but these five teams could take a chance on him.

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers need another wide receiver despite getting Tre Harris in this year’s draft to accommodate Ladd McConkey in the slot. Veteran Mike Williams won’t single-handedly carry this pass attack, and Mingo wouldn’t as well. However, the team is desperate for some relief once they decide that Quentin Johnston isn’t the long-term answer for Justin Herbert’s passing game.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the Saints had one of the worst offseasons in organization history. Even though they got wide receiver Brandin Cooks back on the roster, he’s way past his prime to be his old self. It’s every day that Chris Olave will likely request a trade if the Saints can’t figure out the quarterback situation, which may lead to frustrations. Mingo won’t change much about this offense, but some relief behind Rashid Shaheed and Cooks.

Baltimore Ravens

However, the Ravens need a solid WR3 for the longevity of this offense, especially if they want Lamar Jackson to continue to excel in this offense. Zay Flowers is the only consistent weapon on the entire receiver depth chart. Meanwhile, Rashod Bateman could truly be a trade target if he can’t replicate the same astonishing performance he had last year. Mingo could probably find his groove in one of the best offenses in the league as a capable weapon, especially in the deep attack.

Pittsburgh Steelers

After trading away George Pickens, the Cowboys could do the Steelers a favor and send Mingo in a possible trade if Dallas is desperate to get rid of him. It seems like the Steelers are in rebuild mode, and they won’t get there by eyeing Allen Lazard. Roman Wilson needs a homegrown wideout alongside him, and Mingo could possibly rejuvenate in Pittsburgh.

Kansas City Chiefs

Speaking of revival, quarterback Patrick Mahomes may be the guy to revive Mingo’s career. Last season, he was able to bring out the best in Justin Watson before leaving for other opportunities. Mingo doesn’t need to be involved on every snap, but makes enough splash plays to help the job of Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice.
