Breaking: Cowboys Latest Extension Could Signal Trade

September 3, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Dallas Cowboys and cornerback DaRon Bland agreed on an extension this past weekend, but this could signal a trade for Trevon Diggs. According to the breaking news, the Cowboys will keep at least one of their rising star cornerbacks for at least four more years on a new blockbuster deal. This doesn’t look too good for Diggs, even though he’s trending towards playing Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys had a lot of drama this offseason involving contract negotiations again, and after trading away Micah Parsons, it should be apparent that no one is safe from happening to another star athlete next.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Alabama product had his fair share of issues with the team after receiving a fine for failing to meet the rehabilitation requirement in his current contract. Owner Jerry Jones was not happy at all after this happened, so it could be “when” and not “if” the Cowboys decide to trade him to a new team, especially if he doesn’t perform up to standards this 2025 season. However, the next contract for Diggs after a few seasons will be an uphill battle for the cornerback, and it should not be a surprise if Dallas dangles him on the trade block. Diggs has faced numerous injury issues after signing his recent contract extension a few years back, which has questioned his future with the team.

Washington Commanders

After the Cowboys traded one of their generational talents to Green Bay, it shouldn’t be a surprise anymore if the team is willing to trade any of their players within the NFC East. Diggs reuniting with Commanders head coach Dan Quinn wouldn’t be a bad thing for both sides, so this trade does make sense if you’re the Commanders in this situation. They’re bringing back Marshon Lattimore for another season at least, after trading for him last year to improve their chances in the postseason.

They lost Benjamin St-Juste in free agency, but quickly made it up by signing Jonathan Jones. There is room for improvement in the Washington secondary, and even though Diggs might not be able to stay healthy, he could be an efficient, reliable ballhawker for the Commanders in the right situation.

Carolina Panthers

However, the Carolina Panthers have been able to salvage their pass secondary this offseason, signing Tre’Von Moehrig to provide a ferocious boost. With that, they’ve extended both Michael Jackson and Jaycee Horn as well. Despite that, the Panthers should be in the market for more cornerback depth if Jackson and Horn can’t be at their best at times. Diggs won’t replace either of them, but he has a better edge of taking Jackson’s starting job if the Panthers trade for him.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens thrive on having plenty of star cornerbacks, which is why they signed Jaire Alexander to help veteran Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins. They brought in Chidobe Awuzie as well, but he might face a release as the Ravens have a lot of depth. If this cornerback unit struggles, they could call up Dallas and ask about the availability of Diggs.
