Breaking: Falcons Top Weapon Named in Trade Scenario

August 29, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing him to a three-year deal last offseason, the Atlanta Falcons might consider a trade and send wide receiver Darnell Mooney to a new team to build draft capital. According to Bleacher Report, the source proposed a hypothetical trade that would involve the Miami Dolphins trading Tyreek Hill in exchange for Mooney and a draft pick. While Hill isn’t going anywhere until this upcoming midseason at least, it makes sense why the Falcons could consider moving on from Mooney. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Tulane product began his NFL career with the Chicago Bears before signing a deal with the Falcons last year.

He’s coming off an injury and hasn’t been the most productive receiver out there for quarterback Michael Penix Jr., so the Falcons might want to think about the future of their receiver group. Atlanta has a high level of pass-catchers like Kyle Pitts and Drake London on this team, and as long as they get a versatile wideout as well in return for Mooney, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if they start listening to offers. However, they must do it sooner rather than later, before Mooney enters the 2026 season in his contract year and doesn’t really have trade value anymore, especially if he doesn’t live up to expectations this 2025 campaign.

Hill isn’t god, but he could stabilize this wide receiver room for the development of Penix. Despite that, for this article, the focus is on Mooney. He might be expendable either way if they get a superstar receiver like Hill, and these three teams may have a godfather offer.

Breaking: Falcons Top Weapon Darnell Mooney Named in Trade Scenario – 3 Logical Suitors

Best Fits

Dallas Cowboys

It’s a terrible time to be a Dallas Cowboys fan after trading away their generational defensive player, Micah Parsons. While the Cowboys are most likely rebuilding their defense from scratch, they can use this opportunity to upgrade their offense. After getting two first-round picks, the Cowboys could get creative in this situation, but will they use one of those picks on Mooney? Probably not.

It’s realistic for the Cowboys to give a future fourth-round pick since they already have extra draft capital anyway. Also, Jalen Tolbert is entering the final year of his deal, so they could trade him to Atlanta sooner rather than later, before his value starts dwindling.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers are close to having a solid offensive weapon unit, but it’s just not there yet. Despite signing Keenan Allen this offseason, they can’t really depend on someone who’s slowing down by age. 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey is their best route runner in this receiver group, and given that Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith are still developing, they should invest in a low-stakes option like Mooney, who could break out at any moment when he gets the right looks.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are going to have to figure out how to survive without Rashee Rice for the first six weeks of the 2025 campaign. This means the team should be in the market for a wideout behind Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy. If Patrick Mahomes was able to help Tyquan Thornton and Nikko Remigio earn a roster spot, why wouldn’t Mooney be able to succeed in Kansas City?
