Breaking: Giants Cut Preseason Standout in Shocking Move

August 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite an impressive preseason performance, the New York Giants will cut wide receiver Montrell Washington, who is a part of the releases for the 53-man roster. According to the breaking news, the Giants are moving on from Washington, even though he was one of rookie Jaxson Dart’s favorite offensive weapons in the aerial attack. Unfortunately, a release early after their 3-0 run in the preseason likely means that Washington might not be in the long-term plans for the Giants. However, the good news is the fact that Washington exceeded expectations was a reason why the Giants were willing to move on, so other teams could take a look at him to either sign him to a practice squad or add him late before the 2025 regular season while putting together the final roster.

Between wide receivers Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt, there wasn’t a real path for Washington to find a role in this offense. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the former Samford product has been a journeyman for most of his career after spending just one season with the Denver Broncos. This was until he joined the Kansas City Chiefs, winning an easy ring where he didn’t get enough looks to shine. The good news is that he was able to flourish this past preseason, so it shouldn’t be too long before a team claims him off waivers, and these three teams could do that.

Breaking: Giants Cut Preseason Standout Montrell Washington in Shocking Move – 3 Possible Suitors

Best Fits

Kansas City Chiefs

If any NFL team should bite on the momentum of Washington coming off a brutal Super Bowl loss, it’s the Kansas City Chiefs. The expectation is that the team could lose Rashee Rice for the start of the 2025 regular season, so it’d be smart for head coach Andy Reid to acquire a low-stakes receiver. This is where Washington could invite himself into the conversation since JuJu Smith-Schuster won’t be the same explosive wideout that everyone remembers. Washington doesn’t need to be the best target out there, but be able to stretch the field between Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, and tight end Travis Kelce.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys almost have a well-rounded offense except for the running back position and some depth in the receiver department. After losing Jonathan Mingo due to a brutal injury, the Cowboys should snag the former Giant and start him as a reliable WR4, especially when you share a division with them already. After trading for George Pickens this offseason, the Cowboys must continue to build upon that and get some depth to support quarterback Dak Prescott, who is coming off a season-ending injury.

New Orleans Saints

Despite trading for DeVaughn Vele from the Denver Broncos, the New Orleans Saints could be in the market for another weapon if they want to support quarterback Spencer Rattler in the best way possible. Dante Pettis and Cedrick Wilson Jr. are solid contributors in the background, but they’re on the older side and might not have enough time to develop chemistry with Rattler. The trade for Vele makes sense since they want to build a homegrown receiver unit between Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, so why not get a fourth for the last piece of the puzzle?
