Breaking: Panthers Veteran “In Jeopardy,” Could Be Trade Candidate

June 8, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Carolina Panthers had one of the league’s worst defenses last year, and 2024 free agent signee A’Shawn Robinson did not play up to his contract. After losing Derrick Brown for the season in Week 1, Robinson became the top defensive tackle on the depth chart and couldn’t live up to those lofty expectations. While he finished with a respectable 80 tackles and 5.5 sacks, his 54.6 PFF grade ranked 77th out of 118 eligible defensive tackles.

Now entering his age-30 season, Carolina added several players in the offseason to fortify the interior and could move on from Robinson after just one season. While he won’t fetch the largest return, Bleacher Report‘s Gary Davenport believes there could be a market for his services, and Carolina should listen to any offers.

“The Panthers ranked dead last against the run last year, spurring the team to add Bobby Brown and Tershawn Wharton in free agency and draft Cam Jackson on Day 3 this year,” Davenport writes. “At the very least, that puts Robinson’s spot in the starting line up in jeopardy. But with nine years of NFL experience and coming off a career year rushing the passer, a team with a need in the trenches could have interest in swinging a deal for the 30-year-old.”

Bleacher Report: Panthers Could Trade A’Shawn Robinson

Best Fits

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys re-signed Osa Odighizuwa to anchor their defensive interior, but he can’t do it all by himself. The former third-round pick is a good-but-not-great player who needs more support to successfully deter teams from running the ball up the middle. With first-round pick Mazi Smith looking more and more like a bust with every passing season, the Cowboys should consider an A’Shawn Robinson trade to try and close the gap between them and the dominant NFC East duo of the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals should have one of the league’s most dangerous offenses with Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins. This trio will give them the opportunity to win every game they play, but they’ll need a better defense to hoist the Lombardi trophy. The Bengals had one of the league’s worst defensive lines last year, as superstar Trey Hendrickson was the only above-average player on the roster. A’Shawn Robinson may not be a superstar, but the trade candidate could add some much-needed support for this defensive line.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers could effectively swap defensive tackles with an A’Shawn Robinson trade. Chris Jones remains one of the game’s premier defensive tackles, but former DT2 Tershawn Wharton is now with Carolina. A’Shawn Robinson is a downgrade, but he’s cheaper and should be able to support Kansas City’s interior and help this pursue yet another Lombardi trophy.
