Breaking: Saints Could Trade $22 Million Former Second Rounder

October 7, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite the New Orleans Saints getting their first victory of the 2025 campaign, they could trade linebacker Pete Werner before the season is over. According to a source, Werner could be available for a trade as the defensive player is underperforming, but it might be better to trade him and embrace the rebuild. The Saints are nowhere near being a postseason contender for at least the next three seasons with their quarterback situation, so they should firesale plenty of talent, including Werner, who will likely garner some viable draft capital.

Originally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State product signed a new extension last year, but he hasn’t been the best linebacker out there. The same source believes Werner should be traded to give rookie Danny Stutsman plenty of playing time and establish him as an adequate linebacker in this unit. With Demario Davis already on the verge of retirement and Willie Gay Jr. already gone this past offseason, it might make sense for the Saints to start over and rebuild the linebacker room. However, the biggest question is whether Werner will get enough interest due to his lack of performance on the field.

The Saints have a ton of trade candidates this offseason, but Werner could still be on a team’s radar because of his potential he may have in a new scenery.

Possible Destinations

Baltimore Ravens

Even though the Baltimore Ravens are 1-4 and their season is likely over, the team needs a fresh set of linebackers. Kyle Van Noy is back, but due to age and injuries, the Ravens could allow him to test the free agent market while they must figure out a way to extend Odafe Oweh at the bare minimum. David Ojabo is likely gone, so the team must find some reliable depth, and they should try to get Werner in a trade to salvage this entire group.

Werner won’t be the biggest name to arrive in Baltimore, but it gives both sides a fresh reset. Teddye Buchanan had a few flashes this season, and rookie Mike Green could have more opportunities later on during the season if the Ravens continue to lose, and they’ll rather rest their starters.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a way better team than their record shows. After dealing with injuries in the aerial attack for Patrick Mahomes, the team could easily be back if they make a few adjustments and upgrades. Since Rashee Rice will return this season, and as long as Xavier Worthy can stay healthy, they must find a way to bolster the defense. After trading for Joshua Uche last season, it’s clear that the Chiefs need immediate linebacker help.

The same case can be said about this season. Werner isn’t starting over Nick Bolton, Drue Tranquill or Leo Chenal, but it gives the team another body to rely on to stop easy yardages in situational moments.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have finally shown some life on defense after parting ways with Micah Parsons two months ago. James Houston, Kenneth Murray Jr. and finally Dante Fowler Jr. are stepping up as the emerging stars to shine. However, Jack Sanborn has yet to break out, so they could trade for Werner in a low-stakes revised contract to give this team more defensive help.
