Breaking: Saints Cut Former Second-Round Bust – 3 Possible Destinations

August 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After signing a contract with the New Orleans Saints this offseason, the team will move on and cut running back Cam Akers. According to the breaking news, the Saints are releasing Akers after failing to make the final roster cuts right before the 2025 campaign. Head Coach Kellen Moore admits it wasn’t an easy decision, as Akers still has a lot of gas in the tank. The Saints originally brought him in to salvage the backfield room behind star Alvin Kamara, but they feel comfortable with Kendre Miller and Clyde Edwards-Helaire moving forward. It wasn’t too long after Akers took to X and posted his reaction, “NFL a crazy place,” adding a crying face to the post.

Originally selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, the former Florida State product began his career with the Los Angeles Rams, looking to make an impact as a reliable running back in his rookie season, notching the sixth-most rushing yards by any NFL player in a single game during that campaign. However, after his Achilles injury the following year, he hasn’t been the same, and it was one more year until rookie Kyren Williams stepped in during the 2023 season to get some starting reps, leading to Akers losing his job. After a trade to the Vikings, Akers injured his Achilles again and hasn’t been able to get back on his feet, and spent the following 2024 campaign with the Texans to serve as somewhat of a contributor in the run game. It’s hard to imagine where Akers goes from here, but these three teams should give him one last run.

Potential Fits

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens aren’t in the market for a running back, but when you have an aging Derrick Henry on your roster, it might be beneficial to get as many as you can a part of the core group. Keaton Mitchell showed a couple of flashes throughout the preseason to show he could one day be a versatile running back who can break through tackles and solidify the backfield room, but they could use another veteran. Akers isn’t going to start ahead of Justice Hill, but he could provide some insurance if Mitchell can’t stay healthy.

Dallas Cowboys

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have one of the worst running back units in the league despite signing Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. It’s troubling to know that Williams could be the starter for this group since they drafted a promising fifth-rounder in Jaydon Blue. No one should expect Williams and Sanders to stay in Dallas for more than a year. However, even if Blue emerges as the starter for the backfield unit, they still need depth, and Akers could fill the hole if they part ways with Sanders or Williams.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears failed to get Ashton Jeanty this past NFL Draft, but the good news is that they’ve been able to repair the offensive line and receiver unit for Caleb Williams. However, between D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson, there is still room for improvement. Swift has been the subject of trade rumors, and it might be better to keep him a part of this core group while bringing in a veteran like Akers to keep the running back room intact.
