Breaking: Steelers Release Former Super Bowl Champion – 3 Teams Could Intervene

August 26, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, the team will instead release Robert Woods before the 2025 regular season begins. According to the breaking news, this wasn’t a surprise, as the expectation was that the Steelers would release Woods since they have too many wide receivers in the depth chart. Woods was listed as the WR5 behind Scotty Miller, who became a favorite target for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. With that, it was bound for Woods to lose the job either way if he were to stay on the 53-man roster, given his age and slowing down in terms of production.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former USC product began his career with the Buffalo Bills, hoping to be a consistent playmaker in their offense, but after three seasons, it didn’t work out the way her wanted. Despite that, Woods had his best years when he was with the Los Angeles Rams from 2017-2021, recording two straight 1,100 receiving yard campaigns while catching passes from former Jared Goff, and helped the team be put in the best position to win a Super Bowl under the Matthew Stafford era. Unfortunately, Woods got injured in November during that season, so he didn’t see any playing time in that postseason, and he hasn’t been the same since. One source says the Steelers could bring him back for one more run, but these three teams could snag him on a one-year contract.

Breaking: Steelers Release Former Super Bowl Champion Robert Woods – 3 Teams Could Intervene

Potential Fits

Dallas Cowboys

This would not be a shocking move from the Dallas Cowboys if they sign him to a one-year contract. The team was keeping tabs on him before trading for George Pickens on the search for a long-term WR2 alongside CeeDee Lamb. Dallas always loves going through the cheap route, and given that Woods is available, the Cowboys may roll the dice here in their situation. Jonathan Mingo will miss some time, which is a huge blow to their receiving corps behind Jalen Tolbert, who is entering the final year of his contract.

With that, Woods could be a safe, cheap option that the Cowboys could snag to strengthen the pass attack for Dak Prescott as another capable body to catch the balls on slant routes and stretch the field.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have a mix of veteran and unproven talent for quarterback Justin Herbert. The chances of a postseason contention are slim unless they have a strong run game again this upcoming season. However, they can’t highly depend on and overstress 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton. Wide Receivers Ladd McConkey and veteran Keenan Allen are the only real difference makers in this offensive unit.

While Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith continue to develop, they should take a shot on Woods for depth.

Arizona Cardinals

However, the Arizona Cardinals have all the right pieces coming together on offense for quarterback Kyler Murray. They have their No. 1 receiver, Marvin Harrison Jr., a strong run, and after extending tight end Trey McBride, they’re putting together a well-rounded football team. Despite that, the receiver group is getting younger between Greg Dortch, Zay Jones and Michael Wilson, so they could fit Woods somehow in this unit, given that he’s experienced.
