It was a long wait for the Cowboys to make their fifth-round pick, 93 selections to be exact. Dallas traded away their fourth-round pick to acquire quarterback Trey Lance prior to the 2023 season.Desperately needing to add to their linebacker room, the team picked Notre Dame’s Marist Liufau at No. 87, then sat and waited, and waited, and waited, to see who would be on the board when they returned to the clock.
When they did, they couldn’t believe who was still on the board. Caelen Carson, a top-100 pick on Cowboys Wire’s draft board, was there for the taking. If the Cowboys were thinking about going with a different position with, that idea was simply squashed by best pick available value.
That said, it’s always nice when best pick available aligns with need. And yes, the Cowboys did need a cornerback. Even with the likes of Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland and Jourdan Lewis on the roster, Carson adds depth and security for the future at the position. Notably, Lewis is on a one-year deal and Bland will almost certainly demand a high-value contract once eligible following his record breaking 2023 season.
