Could the Commanders Make This Surprise Release?

August 17, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Unfortunately, the Washington Commanders might have to face a tough decision coming soon, and they may release running back Brian Robinson Jr. before the 2025 campaign. Robinson is entering the final year of his contract, but this could be his final time in a Commander uniform if they continue to see other talent in the same running back room outplay him. According to one insider, he believes Robinson will be out of a job soon as he enters the final year of his contract. There’s absolutely no way a release is a possibility, even though the running back hasn’t been the most flashy player in the league; he has enough to break through tackles and be a solid downhill runner to stretch the field.

Despite that, it didn’t stop the insider from emphasizing that the emergence of seventh-round pick Jacory Croskey-Merritt could threaten Robinson’s starting spot. There’s no concrete evidence of what the Commanders might do if Croskey-Merritt continues to shine, but a backup role makes much more sense in this situation to build off their momentum from last season. After recording 799 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 187 attempts, a trade seems likelier depending on the cap situation. If Austin Ekeler and the rookie continue to outplay Robinson, here are some possible next teams for Robinson that might make sense to establish himself elsewhere.

Could the Commanders Release Brian Robinson Jr? – 4 Possible Next Teams

Best Fits

Dallas Cowboys

The Washington Commanders would never trade any player to their bitter rival, but the Cowboys are in a desperate situation in their running back room. It could happen at the right offer, but expect Dallas to acquire Robinson if he becomes a free agent. Between Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, it’s a slap in the face for quarterback Dak Prescott, who will likely lean on the passing game to move the chains. 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue, when healthy, will probably be remarkable.

New Orleans Saints

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints will most likely have the worst offense led by either Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler. Head Coach Kellen Moore’s best solution might be to run the football, but they can’t afford to use Alvin Kamara too much, as he needs to stay fresh for the postseason. The depth behind him doesn’t look explosive, so they must get some type of upgrade to bring this unit back to life. Robinson could take a step back for a season and serve as a reliable backup and eventually take over once Kamara slows down or retires.

Baltimore Ravens

The running back position isn’t the biggest need for the Baltimore Ravens, but when you have a veteran like Derrick Henry, it’s always important to develop talent in the background. Keaton Mitchell has shown some flashes, but nothing special that persuades the front office that he’s the future. Robinson has a similar size to Henry in a way, and can run over defenders.

Los Angeles Chargers

Depending on what happens to Najee Harris in the wake of the fireworks incident, the Los Angeles Chargers could be in the market for a running back. Head coach Jim Harbaugh loves an old-school run style, which is why 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton is on his way to be a starter. Robinson is a built runner who can naturally fit into this offense nicely and keep the chains moving.
