According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, the Cowboys could sign a veteran cornerback before Week 1. Machota wrote: “If the Cowboys are to make another notable roster move between now and the season opener, cornerback is the best bet. This projection is also made with the thought that Trevon Diggs could start the season on injured reserve.”
Diggs Knee Recovery Creates Speculation that the Cowboys Could Sign Veteran Cornerback
Diggs, who is coming off a season-ending knee injury, has said he hopes to be ready for Week 1. Still, the Cowboys may want to take a cautious approach and not rush him back into action. Whether or not he’s available to start the season, bringing in a veteran could help stabilize the group and mentor the younger players.
The Cowboys’ current cornerback room includes two-time Pro Bowler Trevon Diggs, 2023 All-Pro DaRon Bland, 2025 third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr, and former first-rounder Kaiir Elam. It’s a talented group with plenty of upside, but it leans heavily on youth.

Veteran Cornerback Options To Consider
A return for Stephon Gilmore would make sense. He started all 17 games for Dallas in 2023 and recorded two interceptions. Gilmore is familiar with the Cowboys’ system and could offer instant leadership on a short-term deal.
Another name to watch is Asante Samuel Jr. He spent four seasons with the Chargers and had his best year in 2023, finishing with 13 passes defended and two interceptions. He hasn’t fully met expectations in Los Angeles, but a change of scenery could help.
Veteran Rasul Douglas is also worth considering. Despite a down year in 2024, Douglas split the 2023 season between Green Bay and Buffalo and totaled five interceptions. Douglas brings physicality, experience, and strong ball skills.
Whether the Cowboys take a cautious approach with Diggs and place him on the PUP list or IR, or if he’s ready for Week 1, the Cowboys could sign a veteran cornerback to round out the group. With a young secondary led by Diggs and Bland, adding a seasoned presence would bring valuable experience and depth for the long season ahead.
