Cowboys, Bengals Could Connect On Blockbuster Trade

September 18, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Despite signing Jadeveon Clowney to bolster the defense, the Dallas Cowboys could look to trade for star defensive end Trey Hendrickson at some point during the 2025 regular season. According to reports, many sources are predicting the Cowboys may look to trade for Hendrickson, who might be looking to move on this year. After Joe Burrow’s injury, it’s easy to understand why this is the case since their top quarterback is out for at least three months and won’t be a true contender. Earlier this offseason, the Bengals went through a bunch of drama during the offseason due to the contracts of Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Shemar Stewart and Hendrickson.

Unfortunately, it didn’t matter in the end for the Bengals, as Hendrickson will become a free agent next offseason, and it wouldn’t make sense to keep him on the roster if they find themselves out of the playoff picture. With that, the Cowboys are still in the market for signing a true long-term defensive end to replace Micah Parsons since they shockingly traded him this past month. While they have Clowney as a solid temporary fix for the defensive line, the Cowboys should look into seeing if Hendrickson would eventually be available. With four first-round picks, Dallas may find a way to intrigue Cincinnati by at least sending one of their first-round draft picks in exchange for Hendrickson.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco (15) is chased through the end zone by Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson (91) in the fourth quarter of the NFL Week 1 game between the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025. The Bengals begin the season with a 17-16 win over the Browns.

Other Possible Suitors

Washington Commanders

Similar to the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Commanders have signed veteran Preston Smith to upgrade their defensive line. However, the team is trying to win a Super Bowl sooner rather than later as they’re trying to maximize Jayden Daniel’s contract. Daniel’s injury status may mean there could be some trouble on the way, but they must use this time to start Marcus Mariota and give the defense a chance to put the offense in the right opportunities. Hendrickson joining the Commanders would put this team in the Super Bowl conversation, as he’s hungry on each possession to get after the quarterback.

A big “if” Daniel’s doesn’t appear the same, they could rely on their defense to win a potential championship.

Los Angeles Chargers

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive philosophy has always been winning football games in the trenches since the arrival of head coach Jim Harbaugh. However, they haven’t done much to improve, and Khalil Mack’s injury, along with Denzel Perryman nursing his own ailment, is shooting themselves right in the foot. While they did sign journeyman Da’Shawn Hand to a one-year deal, he isn’t going to dramatically turn this defense explosive overnight.

Hendrickson is the perfect fit for that. The Chargers have the cap space to pull off this potential blockbuster trade, and Harbaugh shouldn’t let it go to waste.

Detroit Lions

However, the Detroit Lions are looking like a formidable football team right now. While they have a stellar offense led by Jared Goff despite their loss against Green Bay, they must improve their defense. The Packers showed Detroit that they have one of the best defensive duos between Rashan Gary and Micah Parsons. With that, why not form one of your own between Aidan Hutchinson and Hendrickson?
