Cowboys’ Jerry Jones says Mike McCarthy handles clock management ‘extremely well’ – Rob Goldberg, Bleacher Report
While the Cowboys have been red-hot over the first quarter of the season, one lingering criticism has been head coach Mike McCarthy’s game and clock management. Naturally, of course, Jerry chimed in to say his coach is doing a wonderful job—especially in terms of clock management.
Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has faced criticism for his game management this season, but team owner Jerry Jones defended him Wednesday on 105.3 The Fan (via the Dallas Morning News):
“I don’t think I’ve ever been in a game that you can’t point to aspects of it that are iffy. And sometimes it has a good result, sometimes it doesn’t. But overall I’m right in there with Mike on his game management. I think he does it extremely well, but more importantly, I want all of our fans to know how conscientious about how hard he works on it, the detail of situational rehearsal and practice that he does.
The response came after a question about McCarthy’s late-game decision-making during Sunday’s 35-29 overtime win over the New England Patriots. The Cowboys called timeout with 24 seconds left in regulation only to kick a field goal on 4th-and-1.
Dallas kicker Greg Zuerlein did hit the 49-yard field-goal attempt, but the decision gave the Patriots an additional chance to win in regulation before the Cowboys eventually won in overtime.
Dak Named NFC Offensive Player of the Week – Nick Eatman, DallasCowboys.com
The Cowboys are riding a five-game winning streak and their latest victory came largely on the arm of one Dakota Rayne Prescott, whose 445 passing yards were the most ever recorded against a Bill Belichick-coached team. Yep, that’ll garner some attention, all right.
It’s the fourth time Dak has won this award in his career, the first since Week 2 in 2020 when he rallied the team to a 40-39 win over the Falcons and then-head coach Dan Quinn.
Now, Quinn is the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator, running a defense that took the lead with another Trevon Diggs interception, which he returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, only to give it back up with a long touchdown by the Patriots.
That set the stage for Dak to lead the offense to a game-tying field goal, followed by a touchdown drive in overtime. Ironically enough, it was on his touchdown throw to Lamb in overtime where he supposedly suffered the calf strain that left him in a walking boot as he exited Gillette Stadium. That hasn’t been a friendly place for the Cowboys, who picked up their win in New England since 1987 at Foxboro Stadium.
Cowboys’ Dak Prescott puts ‘Ask 4 Help!’ on wrist tape to promote mental health – Adam Wells, Bleacher Report
Thanks to the phenomenal photographers along the sidelines of NFL games each week, we as fans get to enjoy some jaw-droppingly stunning images. This week, Steven Senne of the AP captured a great shot of Prescott tucking the ball as he leaves the pocket. Written on his wrist, displayed vertically in the shot, we see the words “Ask 4 Help!” Thus Prescott continues the conversation of mental health awareness that has become so personal to him over the past couple of years.
In a 2020 interview on In Depth With Graham Bensinger (h/t David Helman of DallasCowboys.com), Prescott said that he experienced depression and anxiety in the wake of his brother Jace dying by suicide.
“I think that is important to be vulnerable, to be genuine and to be transparent,” Prescott said. “That goes a long way when you are a leader and your voice is being heard by so many and you can inspire.”
Last month, Prescott posted a video on Instagram to announce the launch of the “Ask 4 Help” campaign.
“I invite you to join us in our mission to champion those who battle mental illness by helping them to realize their lives matter, find their purpose, always know they are not alone and to ask 4 help,” he wrote in the caption with the video.
Where has Terence Steele improved most in Year 2? – Rob Phillips, DallasCowboys.com
La’el Collins may have missed five games due to a suspension for missed drug tests but by the play of the offensive line, you’d hardly know it. Terence Steele’s performance in the interim was nothing short of efficient. But where did the tackle most improve in the offseason?
Steele has now started 19 games at right tackle since joining the Cowboys as an undrafted rookie out of Texas Tech last year, including 14 starts in 2020 while La’el Collins was on injured reserve with a hip injury.
Those 968 rookie snaps proved valuable, even with some tough moments along the way. That early experience, plus his work in the offseason, has helped him become a more productive starter this season while Collins completed a five-game NFL suspension from Weeks 2-6.
“I just think he’s more comfortable, more confident in what the job description is,” Cowboys offensive line coach Joe Philbin said Tuesday. “I think he’s more comfortable systematically with what we’re asking him to do. When you’re a rookie, especially when we didn’t have an offseason program in 2020, everything was maybe a brave new world for him and all the other rookies. I think he worked extremely hard in the offseason from a strength and conditioning standpoint.
“Just a lot of things, and you always hope there’s a natural progression from your first year to your second year, and I think that’s evident with him.”
Troy Aikman on Dak Prescott playing through a calf injury, what Cowboys’ win vs. NE means – SportsDay Staff, DMN
Dak Prescott’s calf strain might not have him quite at 100% come Dallas’s next game against Minnesota, but Hall of Famer and former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman believes Prescott and Kellen Moore will be able to work around any limitations he might have.
“…I think the great thing about playing quarterback relative to other positions is, unless you just can’t throw the ball, something is wrong with your shoulder or elbow or something to that nature, then you can manage the injuries a little bit better. So, my guess is the calf is not going to be 100% in two weeks, but if he goes into the game and he just knows that he can’t run, then he won’t run. He’ll just get rid of the football. So, you’re able to manage it a lot better than if you were a wide receiver or a position where you have to be able to do certain things. And, so, I feel that he’ll play and to what extent he’s injured we probably won’t ever really know the answer to that because nobody will say. But, I don’t see it impacting him other than potentially his ability to scramble. But, they’ve got so many weapons and such a great offensive line and everything else, he doesn’t have to scramble. So, they’ll get around that just fine.”
