Emmitt Smith Reacts To Death Of Former Cowboys Star

April 11, 2022 by The Spun

Like Emmitt Smith, Rayfield Wright was a Pro Football Hall of Famer and legendary member of the fraternity of former Dallas Cowboys.

Wright made six Pro Bowls and earned first-team All-Pro three times as an offensive tackle for Dallas from 1967-79. Last week, he lost his life at the age of 76 after being hospitalized for a seizure.

After news of Wright’s passing became public, Smith paid tribute to his fellow Cowboy on Twitter.

“Rayfield reminded me of my father every time I saw him,” Smith wrote. “I was greeted with a joyful smile and loving hug. We’ve lost a good man with a big heart. Rest in Power and Peace my friend!”

Following Wright’s passing, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced it will fly its flag at half-mast through the Georgia native’s funeral services this week.

“Over the past few weeks, it has become abundantly clear the love that so many Hall of Famers and others around the NFL felt toward Rayfield, his wife, Di, and the extended Wright family,” Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said in a statement. “His gentle nature away from the game belied his commanding presence on the field. All fans, especially those of the Cowboys, will remember fondly his dominance on the offensive line in the 1970s and how he took protecting Dallas quarterbacks as his personal mission.

“We will guard his legacy in Canton with equal tenacity.”
