Gary Brown served as the Dallas Cowboys’ running backs coach under Jason Garrett from 2013-19. On Sunday, the 52-year-old former assistant and NFL running back tragically lost his battle with cancer.
Brown’s passing has hit his former players and teammates hard. Garrett, who worked alongside the Williamsport, Pa. native for those seven seasons, paid tribute to Brown on Twitter today.
“Gary Brown was simply one of the best people I’ve ever been around in my life,” Garrett wrote. “He was a heckuva player, an excellent coach and an even better person. GB was a wonderful husband and father. He was a dear friend to so many. So genuine. So caring. So loyal. He always had your back.
“He had an infectious personality! Such great energy and juice! His big smile and hearty laugh immediately brightened the entire room! I am forever grateful for everything he did for me, our players, our coaches and our entire team during our time together.
“He made a significant impact on all of us and made all of our lives way, way better! He will be sorely missed. Our most sincere condolences go out to Kim and his entire family.”

After leaving Dallas, Brown resurfaced as Wisconsin’s running backs coach in 2021. He also had coaching stints with the Cleveland Browns (2009-12), Rutgers (2008), Susquehanna (2006-07) and Lycoming (2003-05).
Brown played in the NFL with the Houston Oilers, New York Giants and San Diego Chargers from 1991-99, retiring with 4,300 career rushing yards and 21 touchdowns.
He will continue to be missed. May he rest in peace.
