McCarthy went 6-10 in his first season as the Cowboys head coach. The odds were stacked against him, though. His star quarterback in Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury early on and the Cowboys never recovered. Prescott has since made a full recovery.
The Cowboys’ aspirations are sky-high entering Thursday night’s NFL season opener. But it will ultimately come down to the team’s health coupled with McCarthy’s ability to maneuver a trick 17-game NFL season. Jones has confidence in his head coach.
The Cowboys’ owner had nothing but good things to say about McCarthy ahead of Thursday Night Football.
“You can’t shake him,” Jones said of McCarthy, via Mark Lane of WFAA. “He’s very genuine. He works — he’s impressive in adverse situations. You can’t shake him. He’s been there, done that. You don’t see him. He’s not a know-it-all, not that others might be, but you just have somebody that the players believe in, that I believe in. And you — really he just makes you [believe] — especially in light of how we started last year. I think he handles adversity well. He’s proven. He’s a good man to be in the foxhole with.”
We wouldn’t expect Jerry Jones to say anything else about his head coach, even if he felt differently.
The reality is Mike McCarthy has to produce. The Cowboys are a contender this season. If they fail to meet expectations, McCarthy’s seat will get red-hot.
The Cowboys take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.
