Jerry Jones Was Asked If He Regrets Dak Prescott’s Contract

April 14, 2022 by The Spun

Dak Prescott and Jerry Jones embrace before a Dallas Cowboys game.

Last offseason, Dak Prescott signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension with $126 million in guaranteed salary.

Thirteen months later, Jerry Jones has no buyer’s remorse.

Reflecting on the deal with USA Today‘s Jori Epstein, the Dallas Cowboys owner said he’s happy to have the 28-year-old quarterback for 2022 and beyond.

“When I look at what has happened since we’ve done (Dak’s) contract, the reps, the way Dak has evolved, what we’re doing in here to look for players to complement what he does the best,” Jones said. “That’s who, in my mind, we’re complementing whether we’re blocking them out, whether we’re basically trying to get him some field position. So yes, we’re glad we got him.”

If anything, Prescott’s deal seems less hefty in hindsight. Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and Deshaun Watson have all received more guaranteed money since Prescott signed his contract. Watson’s record-breaking $230 million made Jones relieved the Cowboys retained their star quarterback last year.

“I’m proud we have it,” Jones said of Prescott’s contract. “Deshaun’s contract was a big one. Just reinforces that it just takes one or two teams to really covet a player and they really get those numbers on up there.”

The newly paid Prescott delivered 4,449 passing yards and a career-high 37 passing touchdowns for the NFC East champions in 2021. Last month, the Cowboys restructured his contract to free up nearly $15 million in cap space before free agency began.
