After spending more than two decades in the NFL, Rod Marinelli is finally ready to enter the next chapter of his life.
On Thursday afternoon, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced that Marinelli plans on retiring this offseason.
“Former Lions head coach and most recently Raiders DL coach Rod Marinelli is planning to retire, sources say. He’s had interest in continuing to coach, but has packed up and headed to Texas. At 72, Marinelli has been one of the game’s most respected teachers,” Rapaport announced on Twitter.
Marinelli began his coaching career in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was their defensive line coach from 1996 to 2001.
In 2002, the Buccaneers promoted Marinelli to assistant head coach. Four years later, he became the head coach of the Detroit Lions. He had a 10-38 record in a three-year span.
Shortly after his stint with the Lions, Marinelli signed a deal with a different team in the NFC North. The Chicago Bears added him to their staff as an assistant head coach and defensive line coach.

Marinelli’s most successful stint might have very well taken place with the Dallas Cowboys. He was on their staff from 2013 to 2019.
The final coaching stint of Marinelli’s career occurred in Las Vegas. The Raiders had him on their staff as a defensive line coach for the past two seasons.
We wish Marinelli all the best as he enters retirement.
