Prior to last night’s NFL draft first round, veteran Cowboys writer Bob Sturm took to Twitter with a defiant statement.
“If [the Cowboys] take Tyler Smith in Round 1, I will submit my retirement papers. #WinWin,” he wrote after seeing the offensive tackle’s name on Mel Kiper Jr.’s mock draft.

Well, it happened.
With the No. 24 overall pick, the Dallas organization selected the offensive lineman out of Tulsa.
The Cowboys certainly need some offensive line depth this season following the departures of La’el Collins and Connor Williams. But, there’s no doubt that Smith has some work to do before he becomes a consistent option on the team’s offensive front.
At 6-foot-5, 324 lbs, Smith has the NFL specifications, but his propensity to collect holding penalties could be an issue as he heads into his rookie season.
Though he played tackle in college, Smith is expected to begin his NFL career at the guard position.
