Simone Biles has faced some criticism for her decision to pull out of multiple Olympic events this week, notably withdrawing ahead of the team event after a scary moment during her vault. She cited her mental health, and lack of trust in her abilities that day in making the decision.
The U.S. wound up winning the silver medal that day, something that may not have happened if Biles performed in her state that day. Today, 18-year old American gymnast Suni Lee stepped up in a huge way with Biles out for the women’s individual all-around event, winning the gold medal.
Last year, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott spoke openly about his own struggles with mental health. During training camp, he was asked about the decision that Simone Biles, a Texas native, made this week. Unsurprisingly, he fully supports the legendary Olympian.
“That’s her decision. Obviously she was feeling something that she didn’t necessarily feel comfortable to perform,” Prescott told FOX 4 Sports. “And she’s doing a very dangerous event and very dangerous sport. When you’re in the air flipping and doing all of these things, if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, or if your body’s (not) in the right place or your mind’s not in the right place, you could be seriously injured.”

“I understand where she’s coming from, and I don’t think it’s up to me or anybody else to judge that,” Prescott added.
We’ve come a long way when it comes to discussions of mental health in recent years, especially in the sports world. Athletes like Prescott, the star quarterback for one of the biggest franchises in all of sports, and Biles, perhaps the great gymnast in history, help drive that in a major way.
“The outpouring (of) love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before,” Biles tweeted on Wednesday.
