The Dallas Cowboys have understandably downplayed Dak Prescott’s shoulder strain for several days now. Head coach Mike McCarthy passed along concerning news about his franchise quarterback on Tuesday, though.
Prescott is dealing with a shoulder strain. He hasn’t been a full participant in the Cowboys’ recent practices as a result. He hasn’t even thrown the ball very often this past week.
McCarthy passed along new information surrounding Prescott’s shoulder strain on Tuesday. He said the Cowboys quarterback has “taken a step back,” according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. Prescott, as a result, will not throw at practice on Tuesday and will not play in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday.
The Cowboys are taking every precaution to ensure the 28-year-old is healthy for the 2021 season.

It’s plausible this isn’t a serious situation. The Dallas Cowboys are probably just being cautious and protecting their franchise quarterback here. But nonetheless, it’s concerning.
Dak Prescott missed the majority of the 2020 season when he went down with a gruesome season-ending injury. He’s made a full recovery since and is supposed to be ready to go by Week 1. But his new shoulder strain is another unfortunate development.
The reality is Prescott wouldn’t have taken many snaps in Thursday’s Hall of Fame Game. Starting quarterbacks play a series or two in preseason games, and that’s about it. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush will probably get the start in Prescott’s place.
The Dallas Cowboys take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game this Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
