NFC East news: After stagnant contract talks, McLaurin requests a trade from Washington

Terry McLaurin requesting trade from Commanders as no progress has been made toward extension – Grant Gordon, NFL.com

The Cowboys aren’t the only NFC East team facing a trade request from a star player.

Terry McLaurin is taking his desires for an extension to the next level.

McLaurin, who’s currently a training camp hold-in, is requesting a trade from the Washington Commanders as contract negotiations have stalled and there’s been no progress, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

There’s no guarantee general manager Adam Peters and the Commanders will oblige McLaurin’s request, but it’s a stern move from the veteran wide receiver, who’s clearly grown frustrated with the lack of a resolution.

The 29-year-old McLaurin is entering the final season of a three-year deal with $15.5 million in base salary due and just $2.8 million in guaranteed money.

He’s made no secret of his desire for a new deal and taken a hardline stance that’s apparently not softened the Commanders brass’ approach.

McLaurin reported late to training camp on Sunday and was subsequently placed on the team’s physically unable to perform list. Prior to that he was absent from organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.

On July 15, McLaurin expressed his frustration to the media as talks had been paused for more than a month at that juncture and have clearly failed to heat up.

McLaurin, who’s coming off his second Pro Bowl campaign and his fifth straight 1,000-yard season, is — or was — set to lead a WR room that includes Deebo Samuel, Noah Brown, Michael Gallup and Luke McCaffrey, among others. Washington acquired Samuel via trade this offseason. Consequently, Samuel is among a throng of notable wide receivers over the past few years who have requested trades amid contract squabbles such as his former San Francisco 49ers teammate Brandon Aiyuk and Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins. None of those three were traded at the time and deals were eventually worked out.

Giants’ RB Tyrone Tracy not threatened by Cam Skattebo hype – Ed Valentine, BigBlueView.com

Skattebo’s success just makes for a better RB room in New York.

Tyrone Tracy had an exciting rookie season for the New York Giants. Tracy ran for 839, second-most of any rookie running back, and compiled 1,123 yards from scrimmage.

A fifth-round pick, he looked like he could be an exciting play-maker for the Giants for the next several seasons.

Fast forward to the summer of 2025, and Tracy is RB1 for the Giants. Yet, he seems like a player flying under the radar.

No. 3 overall pick Abdul Carter is wowing teammates. There is a first-round rookie quarterback to keep fans’ attention in Jaxson Dart. There is a new starting quarterback in Russell Wilson. There is a new rookie running back in Cam Skattebo who is becoming a fan favorite and gaining praise from the head coach.

Tracy is just plugging along, getting his reps and showing play-making ability as both a runner and receiver.

The presence of Skattebo, a good player and a big personality, doesn’t threaten him.

“Cam here is nothing but adding to what we got. I think that it’s a great addition to the room,” tracy said. “If you look around our room, there’s really nothing anyone can’t do. We didn’t add Cam just to do one thing. We added him because he’s a good running back. You know what I’m saying? They didn’t bring me here just to do one thing. They added me because I’m a good running back.

“So, at the end of the day, whoever’s in there on third down, second down, first down, it doesn’t matter what it is. You’re going to produce, and that’s the standard that we have in a running back room. When we go on the field and we get them opportunities, whether it’s pass or run or even pass protection, man, make the play. There is no third down back. There is no, you’re passing down back, whatever. There’s not that in our room. It’s more so can you play, and then when you do get the opportunities, take care of it. You know what I’m saying? And make the most of it.”

Eagles legend Brandon Graham explains why there will be ‘no Super Bowl hangover’ for Philadelphia – Cody Nagel, CBS Sports

Philadelphia seems poised to pick up where they left off last year.

After capturing their first Super Bowl title following the 2017 season, the Philadelphia Eagles struggled to maintain momentum, posting back-to-back 9-7 campaigns before a disappointing four-win season led to the departure of coach Doug Pederson. But this time around, though, Eagles legend Brandon Graham doesn’t expect the team to suffer a similar decline as reigning champions.

Graham, one of four players to play for both Philadelphia Super Bowl-winning teams, retired this past March. He spoke about the current roster on the “Exciting Mics” podcast, hosted by Eagles defensive backs Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship.

“You know what I like about what y’all got going on? Like, I don’t think it’s going to be no Super Bowl hangover,” Graham said. “We didn’t have the same type of team that y’all got now. Like, y’all got a bunch of the guys back.”

While only a handful of NFL teams have managed to win consecutive Super Bowls — the Kansas City Chiefs being the most recent to do so before the Eagles stopped them from a three-peat — Philadelphia’s current roster might be uniquely positioned to avoid the post-championship slump.

The Eagles maintain a strong core on both sides of the ball with quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver A.J. Brown and tackles Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata all returning on offense and defensive lineman Jalen Carter, linebacker Zack Baun and the young secondary group of DeJean, Quinyon Mitchell and Blankenship on defense. With a deep roster of experienced players, Philadelphia could be built to sustain success rather than fall victim to the usual championship hangover.

“We lost a lot of defensive guys, like Milton [Williams], them guys on the D-line, but I still feel like there’s a lot of guys under them that’s ready to make their name too,” Graham said. “But the back end, how y’all boys playing, and then linebackers. I mean, man, offense, everybody’s still back. Nobody lost on the O-line. I feel like it’s going to be a good one.”
