The first selection of the 2024 NFL Draft for the Dallas Cowboys is Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton.
With the 29th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton. This pick has been forecast for the Cowboys since Tyron Smith left in free agency. The Cowboys traded back to get an extra third-round pick, and got Guyton anyway. This was a huge need for Dallas and they have made their move to fill it.
Ascending tackle prospect with the traits and tape to project a bright future as a high-level pass protector in the league. Guyton has battled injuries and had limited reps coming over from TCU after the 2021 season, but his flashes have been complemented by increasing consistency. He plays with a high center of gravity and needs to get stronger, but leveraged hand strikes can help overcome those concerns. He should continue to get better as a run blocker but might never shine in that department. Guyton’s value comes with his pass protection, as he has the length, feet and body control to become a human roadblock. He should become a talented starter at either tackle position.
A former H-back at TCU before making the transfer to right tackle, Tyler Guyton is one of the premier athletes at the tackle spot in the 2024 class. An elite mover with an extremely gifted athletic profile, he glides in space and touts one of the most explosive lower halves in the country.
In pass pro, Guyton’s footwork allows him to consistently square up opposing pass rushers. Will rarely have to reset feet to adjust to opposing pass-rush plans. Active hands to win first and touts the necessary grip strength to stop opposing defenders in an instant. Once hands are latched, the rep is usually over. Showcases an outstanding base and anchoring vs power is an easy operation. Rarely caught retracing steps to locate stunts.
As a run blocker, Guyton fires off the line of scrimmage and is quick to out-leverage defenders. Easy displacement ability with power that stems from a strong lower half. Would like to see an increased usage of length, however, to consistently move bodies away from alleys. Will at times attack a block with body weight instead of technique and power.

Cowboys needs:
OT: Tyron Smith is no longer the Cowboys left tackle. That is something we haven’t said in a decade. With the All-Pro moving on and no heir-apparent on the roster, unless you count sliding Tyler Smith outside, the team needs a replacement.
C: Tyler Biadasz settled in with Dan Quinn in Washington, leaving a hole in the middle of the line. Brock Hoffman would be the next man up, but bet on the Cowboys bringing in some competition.
RB: No Tony Pollard after he moved on leaves Rico Dowdle as the top guy on the depth chart. There will be a body added here, it’s just unknown how early they will strike.
LB: The Cowboys lost Leighton Vander Esch to a medical retirement. New DC Mike Zimmer likes bigger, more traditional linebackers. They got Eric Kendricks, but they need more.
DT/DE: The defensive line’s depth was thinned out in free agency as Dorance Armstrong, Dante Fowler and Johnathan Hankins all departed. More bodies are required.
CB/WR: These two very important positions always need churning of the depth.
