As the 2025 regular season inches closer, one NFL veteran journeyman wide receiver, Robert Woods, could find himself on the roster bubble. After the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a deal this offseason, he hasn’t shown that he will last long on this roster. With Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets in new free agent signee Scotty Miller and having three wide receivers like DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin that are shaping up to be starters is a reason why Woods is on the brink of a release. The Steelers are still keeping tabs on wide receiver Gabe Davis after two visits, so that tells you that if the team signs him before the 2025 campaign, they could release Woods.
Originally selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the former USC product has been a journeyman for all of his 12 seasons in the league. Woods is winding down in his career, and it feels like he’s about four years at best from retiring. While he won’t be the best available option on the market if the Steelers decide to move on early, he could be a mentor for any offensive pass-catching locker room that wants to improve. The wide receiver won’t receive the best deal out there, but these four teams could sign him on a one-year contract at minimum, as Woods still has some juice left in the tank.

NFL Veteran Journeyman Robert Woods Could Be On Roster Bubble – 4 Possible Destinations
Best Fits
Kansas City Chiefs
Since the Kansas City Chiefs will likely lose Rashee Rice for a few games this season due to a suspension, the Chiefs should roll the dice on a low-risk wide receiver on a bargain. They don’t need the best option out there, but someone who can move the chains and stretch the field for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Woods is the perfect veteran for that scenario as he isn’t going to take snaps away from Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown. He could create more opportunities to get them open down the field in crucial moments.
Dallas Cowboys
Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys have lost Jonathan Mingo and will be without him for a few games while he recovers from an injury. The team is left with three capable receivers between George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb and Jalen Tolbert. There could be some improvement here, but like the Chiefs, they don’t need the best of the best. Even if they were eyeing Amari Cooper, they could take a chance on Woods instead to see what he could do in this offense.
Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders have yet to agree on a new deal with WR1 Terry McLaurin, which puts Deebo Samuel, Luke McCaffrey and Michael Gallup in the worst scenario. While Samuel did show some flashes during practice, he does have a history of inconsistencies and injuries. Samuel was under fire for looking slow at practice, so it’s up in the air for Jayden Daniels’ pass game unless they run the football often or target tight end Zach Ertz for most of the passes. Woods is what the Commanders could be looking for since the team is building an old-school roster to win a Super Bowl sooner rather than later.
Los Angeles Chargers
However, the Los Angeles Chargers could find themselves in the market for an upgrade in the wide receiver department. Jalen Reagor was named a cut candidate right before the 2025 campaign, and being that the Chargers are building around Tre Harris, KeAndre Lambert-Smith and Ladd McConkey, it doesn’t hurt to add one more veteran like Woods to pair with Keenan Allen.
